School is almost here! Even for those of us who no longer feel the excitement or dread, this season still brings out the desire to hit the mall. This is the season where it’s accepted to get out and do your fall shopping. The stores want that… they give tons of deals for back-to-school. There are even weekends that have no sales tax to get us out and spending money.
The problem for those of us who don’t go back to school is that we don’t really need anything new, so should we spend money on this? I think there are 5 items of clothing that can definitely use a refresh for fall and this is the best time of year to buy them. I’d get a fall dress, a nice blazer, a new pair of jeans and black trousers, as well as a professional shirt. Come along with me to find out how I’d style these…
Here are my 5 top pieces to get this fall.
Gap – Jeans | Loft – Button Back Top | WHBM – Ultra Slimming Skinny Pants |
Halogen – Pintuck Detail Shift Dress | Blank – Hipster Chic Blazer
I’ve chosen these five for specific reasons. I go into detail of what I would wear with each of these pieces below, starting with the jeans and ultra slimming black skinny pants.
Jeans & Black Pants
I always love getting a new pair of jeans every fall because I tend to live in them. The Gap ones have a good amount of patchy holes and are a good price. The black trousers are from White House Black Market. A store I rarely remember to browse, but should because their sales are great and so are their skinny pants. As you can see from above, I lay out casual shirts as well as work appropriate ones. Mixing and matching them with the pant choices are a great way to add more variety to your wardrobe. Also the shoes can be interchanged as well.
Casual Shirts: Sézane x My Travel Dreams – Bon Voyage t-shirt | Gap – Vintage V-Neck T-Shirt | H&M – Satin Camisole Top |
Upscale Shirts: Modcloth – Thoroughly Ladylike Button-Up Top in Blush | J.Crew – Ruffle Popover Top | H&M – V-neck Cotton Sweater
Shoes: Sole Society – Pollina | Steve Madden – Petra Open Side Bootie
Shirt

This mint green top is so ladylike and pretty! The mint color is also a deeper mint that’s perfect for fall. I would even go so far as to pair this with a deep burgundy pant or skirt for a real fall palette. The buttons down the back are a surprise that adds some interest. The sleeves are a bit of a puff but not too much as to make you think you’re back in the 1800s. As you can see above, I love the idea of pairing this under a jumpsuit as well. It’s an unexpected pop of color with a black one, as well as being different.
Zara – Faux Leather Leggings | Piper and Scoot – The Striped Pencil Skirt in Coral | Piper and Scoot – the Burbank Button Jumpsuit in Black | Loft – Skinny Polka Dot Ankle Pants
Shoes: Zara – Two-Toned Ballet Flats | Zara – Belted Leather Heeled Ankle Boots
Dress
This dress is a perfect fall addition to any wardrobe. The wine color is fall inspired, yet the pops of yellow and blue make it unique. I would wear black tights and a knee high boot. The long sleeves are great for when it’s just a little chilly. For those who run cooler, a chunky knit sweater or a longer cardigan are perfect. I would wear this out with a faux leather jacket before it starts to get too cold.
Tights: Hue – Women’s Super Opaque Tights | Calzedonia – Total Shaper Back Seam Tights
Cardigans: H&M – Fine-knit Cardigan | Free People – Saturday Morning Cardigan
Boots: Style & Co – Madixe Wide-Calf Riding Boots
Blazer
Express – Downtown Cami | Target – Atari Meet & Greet | Piper and Scoot – The Rosie Patterned Jumpsuit | Kule – The Modern 1973 | Gap – Flounce Short Sleeve Tie-Belt Dress
What’s more school inspired than a blazer? Nothing! I love throwing a blazer on over anything. All of the pieces from the jeans and pants earlier would also look great with this blazer or a black one. I chose the grey one because you should already have a good black blazer in your closet. Throwing a graphic t-shirt on under a blazer instantly kicks up the outfit. It also is a great addition to a dress or even a jumpsuit. I’m definitely on board with the jumpsuit trend and if you got one in the summer, you don’t have to stop wearing it just because it’s cold out. Throw a shirt on underneath a spaghetti strap one (see shirt section above) or a blazer over a short-sleeved jumpsuit. Getting a t-shirt for a cause and throwing a blazer over it is a great conversation starter as well. The 1973 one is rather expensive, but 30% of each purchase goes to the National Institute of Reproductive Health.
