Bedroom blues no more – well, as the title says, it’s the beginning of a new look. My sister has moved into a new house and given me free reign to decorate the guest room however I want to. I’m not entirely sure she knows what she’s getting herself into. Muhahahaha! This is going to be a bit of a series starting with this first post of what I envision for the room down to the final reveal.

Bedroom before

First things first, here is the bedroom. As you can see it has a strange shape. There’s a wall that protrudes into the room, so I’ve decided to split the room into a couple of sections. First up is the bed itself. The bed frame is ordered and will arrive mid-February. For those trying to buy home goods right now it seems like they’re taking way longer than usual to arrive. I guess everyone’s redoing rooms during these times.

1. Joss & Main – Sanford Upholstered Low Profile Standard Bed | 2. Pottery Barn Teen – Metallic Trim Shelf with Clothing Bar | 3. Anthropologie – Gleaming Primrose Mirror | 4. The Home Depot – Large 48 in. W x 7.8 in. D x 1.3 in. H White MDF Slim Floating Wall Shelf | 5. WallShøppe – Pacifico Palm – Peach | 6. Walls Need Love – Forever Palms | 7. Wayfair – House of Hampton – Cargo Arm Bench with Storage | 8. Esty – HomeArtStickers – Aztec – Furniture Appliques – Fretwork – Overlays – Makeover – Furniture Decor – Malm Kits – Furniture Hardware – Ornaments | 9. Ikea – Malm dresser | 10. West Elm – Book Nook Armchair | 11. Overstock – 5 piece Pintuck Full/Queen Comforter Set | 12. Pottery Barn Teen – Open Cube Shelves, Set of 2, Gold

The Joss & Main Sanford (1) Upholstered Low Profile Standard is ordered and will arrive in February. For those of you who don’t know what Low Profile Standard means, don’t worry, I didn’t either. From what I’ve read it’s a lower bed frame but you CAN use a box spring on it. A lot of the newer beds (like your Caspers and Purple) don’t come with a box spring. In that case, your best bet for a bed frame is a platform one because the mattress sits upon wooden slats in the frame.

Now for the most interesting part – I created this odd little bedroom mockup from Roomstyler in order to be able to see how a layout might look.

Mock of bedroom

What you can’t see are the walls, but imagine they’re there. I envision putting a small dresser when you enter the room. I thought the Malm from Ikea would be a good choice and then to jazz it up a bit, I want to get these overlays from Etsy (8) to put over the front of the drawers. (You can see the way the overlays look in number 8 above.) The open cube shelves (12) might also be nice over the dresser. Here’s a little tip for you – check out the teen and kid sections of high end stores like Pottery Barn. You might be able to find some really fun and different items like these shelves for your bedroom or other rooms in the house.

Then in the area that sticks out, I think a floor length mirror will be a great addition. I’m obsessed with the ones from Anthropologie. I think they look very Parisian. And, if you know me, that’s one of my favorite things!

For the right side nook, I’d like to get a little creative. I think doing a wallpaper – the peel and stick kind – would be really fun! I’ve been inspired by Lindsay Silberman’s office on the wallpaper. I would also put up floating shelves and make it into a bit of a reading nook. I would put up 3 floating shelves like these (number 4) for books and storage. I’d also throw in a chair to round out the cozy corner. I like the pink chair because it’s a little pop of femininity, but not overkill on it. Doesn’t it sound so decadent to have a reading nook in your bedroom?

There are windows at the front of the room and I think a bench would be a nice touch under there. However, with the chair it might become too much. It would be a good idea to get their chair first then see if the room feels cramped. I might even take a bench from another area of the house to get a feel for it. The cool thing about the bench I chose is that it has storage. Since there’s not a huge dresser, it might be nice to have another place to store items.

On the wall near the bed, I’m toying with the idea of hanging up the Metallic Trim Shelf with Clothing Bar. I’m not entirely sure it will be used to hang up clothes, but it’s a fun piece that could be used to hang up anything. Maybe even headphones!

This is just a pie in the sky idea of how I’d like the room to look. Once everything starts to come in, I’ll start to update you all on the decisions we make.

  • I can’t wait to see the finished room. I really like the mirror on the wall that sticks out. It will be very nice to use before going out once we can go out and about.

    • Oh for sure! I can’t wait for then – cuz you’re right, who needs to know what your outfit looks like now? If the top is good for the zoom call, you’re free to wear whatever you want on the bottom!
