Christmas Inspired by Home Alone

Perhaps this year your Christmas is inspired by the movie Home Alone. This 1990 movie is a classic in the Chiarello home and is one we watch every year. Multiple times. Like practically every day during December multiple times. This year one of my readers challenged me to come up with some decor inspired by the movie. I’m not going to lie – it wasn’t easy. The production designers had a ton of things custom made and while they did exist once upon a time, in 2021 they no longer can be found. However, I think I did a pretty good job in trying to match decor while keeping the overall spirit of the movie, but you tell me how I did!

1. JC Penny – 12″ Natural Wood Nutcracker– Set of 3 | 2. Grandin Road – Winter Berry Candle Rings | 3. Wayfair- Grantham Microfiber Modern & Contemporary Quilt Set | 4. Etsy – Emerald Green Window Curtains | 5. Home Depot – 30 in. Woodmoore Battery Operated Mixed Pine LED Pre-Lit Artificial Christmas Wreath with Timer and Plaid Ribbon | 6. Wayfair – The Holiday Aisle – Hangright Nostalgia Stocking | 7. Amazon – Glitzhome 100% Acrylic Dress Stewart Tartan Plaid Throw Blanket with Fringe | 8. Pottery Barn – Faux Potted Poinsettias | 9. Ballard Designs – Suzanne Kasler Holiday Plaid Drum Buffet Shade | 10. Nahla Home – Royal Stewart Red Plaid Tartan Colorful Theme Sofa Cover

I’ve gathered a number of pieces that are most like the living room in the movie itself. This post was extremely helpful in deciding what was close to the original film set.

Here we go – these items above are the ones that are most like what was in the movie. There were nutcrackers (number 1) on a side table in the living room. In the same room hanging from the mantel above the fireplace were a number of stockings. (As it should be.) This one (number 6) was the closest in feeling to the originals. I definitely couldn’t find ones that were any closer. In the same room there were green damask curtains hanging. These etsy ones (number 4) could be used year round. But I would probably just pull them out at this time of year. Last in this room were the many real poinsettias dotted around the house. I like these (number 8) from Pottery Barn because they’re faux. Then you don’t have to worry about picking up the fallen leaves, or watering them for those of us who aren’t so good at that.

The best part of this was finding the red comforter (number 3). I did have to go back and see if their bed was indeed all red. For some reason I thought it was all plaid. Turns out I was wrong.

The rest of the items I chose because they felt like they would fit in to the Home Alone world.

The family didn’t really entertain – there wasn’t time before they had to leave, so it was just pizza at the kitchen table. I’d like to think if they had the time to entertain, they would have used these white candle rings (number 2) to spruce up their dining table. In addition to this idea, the house had wreaths everywhere. This one from the Home Depot (number 5) is super traditional which is what the Home Alone house was in my eyes. The next three items are plaid, or tartan, however you want to put it. The blanket (number 7) will be cozy to snuggle up in while you watch Home Alone yet again. The lamp shade (number 9) is a fun way to add more Christmas inspired decor to your house in a different way from just garland and wreaths. The last item I have for this list is a bit more fun – in the film, the couches in the living room have a flowery pattern on them. It would be more fun to put this slipcover (number 10) over your couch just for the season. Then it also keeps your couch safe from the spills that might happen during this time.

What do you think of these great Christmas inspired products? Are you going to order any of these to decorate your home for the season? If you do, tag me on Instagram or let me know in the comments below!
