Houndstooth is defined as:
a usually small broken-check textile pattern also : a fabric woven in this pattern
According to Entertainment Tonight, it’s the “only” trend you need for this fall. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s just fall of 2019; houndstooth has been one of my favorite fall patterns for years now. I’m not sure if it’s because it incorporates my favorite colors (black and white) in a cool pattern that’s not a stripe or polka dot. Imagine my happiness when I realized the major designers like Chanel, Balmain, and Gucci were putting it on the runway for their Fall 2019 collections. Of course, not all of us are on that sort of budget, so I’ve found some picks that are cheaper than those. Read on to see what I’m talking about.

I wasn’t sure it there were items in the physical stores yet, but I was lucky enough to find a H&M in Manhattan that had some in stock. That’s how much I want to show you guys how these pieces look on a normal human body – but before we get to that, you’ll get to see my other picks…

1. Amazon – Star Vixen Women’s Below- Below-Knee Pencil Skirt with Back Slit | 2. Lovers + Friends – Basset Cardigan | 3. H&M – Captain’s Cap |
4. kate spade – cameron street houndstooth lalena | 5. Asos – Morgan houndstooth check blazer in mono | 6. And Other Stories – Houndstooth Sweater | 7. Forever 21 – Belted Houndstooth Blazer | 8. H&M – Single-breasted Jacket | 9. H&M – Slacks | 10. H&M – Skirt with Belt |
11. H&M – Long Jacket – Pink | 12. Asos Design – Soft Tux wrap mini dress in large houndstooth with long sleeves
Number 1 – I’ve been telling one of my good friends for a few months now that she needs to get a pencil skirt because it goes with everything and she keeps fighting me because it’s not “interesting” enough. Well, this one is definitely interesting with the houndstooth pattern. This can be worn with loads of different colors; black and white are the basics, but I could also see it with red, lilac, and green.
Number 2 – If you don’t want to jump into the trend full out, you might want to start with a cardigan to throw over a normal outfit. This way, you get to stay warm while you’re trying a new trend. This one looks incredibly comfy, so there’s that.
Numbers 3 & 4 – Speaking of dipping your feet into the houndstooth waters, these two items, the hat and the purse, are a great way to try out the trend. It’s even less of a commitment than the cardigan.
Number 5 – This blazer is similar to the Gucci cardigan, with a Chanel tweed feeling as well. It’s a great piece that will look great with a black skirt, pants, or even jeans. It’s a way to get a designer look for so much less.
Number 6 – I never shop at “and other stories” because honestly, most stuff doesn’t fit me. However, I’d make an exception for this sweater. The color is fantastic and I like the solid color bottom, collar, and sleeve touches. This would look great with anything. In fact, I’d go so far to say it would be a cool pattern clashing sort of look with polka dot jeans.
Number 7 – This would be a great dupe for the Veronica Beard Harvey Belted Jacket. It is very work appropriate and would look lovely even with jeans. I did read in the reviews that you cannot take off the belt, so that might be problematic for some.
Numbers 8, 9, 10 & 11 – Now we come to where I tried on the items. I liked this blazer (8), it was a size 10. The pants (9) were a size 12. Both fit rather well. It feels like a great work outfit especially if you work at a law firm or buttoned up corporate job.

Ok, so this skirt, number 10 runs small. I tried on a 12 which has been my usual size for a while, and it didn’t fit at all. I couldn’t even zip it all the way up. I hid it pretty well, didn’t I? HA! Take a gander at my insta stories today to see the behind the scenes of this one!

Number 11 – This is very lightweight and comfy. I love the length. It would be great for the transition to fall. It also is a bit stretchy – I was able to get a medium and look how well it fits. I pushed the sleeves up to be rad – is it working? I also like how I paired it with your everyday jeans and white shirt. See, you don’t need to be fancy all the time – just throwing a bit of houndstooth on will instantly elevate the outfit.
Number 12 – This Asos dress is perfect for a night on the town! I would love to see it with heels that have a pop of color like fuchsia, pink, or mint.
What do you all think? Is this a trend you’re going to wear come fall? Have you already worn it? Let me know in the comments!
I ? 2 and 5 I am always into sweaters and jackets. I like the bigger houndstooth than the small checked styles.
I am too! I’m glad you like both of them. I’m partial to number 2 myself. 😉
